Cold Water Life in Kachemak Bay

Sea otters, harbor seals, humpback whales, porpoise and bald eagles share Kachemak Bay. A coastal survey reads the cold water to learn what the bay can support.

Kachemak Bay holds sea otters, harbor seals, harbor porpoise, humpback whales, bald eagles, black-legged kittiwakes, common murres, pigeon guillemots and marbled murrelets. The cold water stays between roughly 38 and 48 degrees Fahrenheit across the year, and that temperature is what keeps the food chain in place. A coastal survey reads the bay by counting what is there, measuring what feeds it, and matching both against the season.

Which marine mammals and birds live in Kachemak Bay?

Sea otters are the most visible. They raft in the kelp beds off Ismailof Island and around the mouth of the bay, lying on their backs to crack clams and urchins. A survey boat working the south shore will pass dozens in a morning. Harbor seals haul out on the rocks at low tide and follow the salmon runs up the streams in July and August. Harbor porpoise move in small groups of two to five, usually a low back and a quick breath, easy to miss unless the water is flat.

Humpback whales arrive with the feed. They work the bay from May into September, and the numbers rise when the herring and sand lance bunch up. Orcas pass through, but they are not residents. On the bird side, bald eagles hold the spruce tops along the shore, and the cliffs and outer rocks carry kittiwakes, murres, guillemots and murrelets. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game keeps the seasons and limits for the species people take; the rest are read, not counted for harvest.

How does a coastal survey decide what a bay can support?

The method is the same one used on any cold coast, and the field reference work behind ecological assessment in northern New England lays out the logic: define the boundary, list the habitats inside it, measure the inputs, then compare the standing stock against what the inputs can renew. In Kachemak Bay the boundary is the mouth at Anchor Point and the head at the spit, plus the two arms that split around Ismailof Island.

A survey starts with the physical frame. NOAA tide and current tables give the range, which runs past 20 feet on a spring tide, and the current through the channel between Homer Spit and the island. USGS charts and geographic names fix the depth contours and the place names. The National Weather Service marine forecast gives the wind, which decides whether a small boat can hold a transect line at all.

Then the survey lists habitat. Eelgrass beds, kelp, rocky intertidal, mudflats, stream mouths, and the deep channel. Each one supports a different set. Eelgrass holds juvenile salmon and herring spawn. Kelp holds urchins, and urchins hold otters. Mudflats hold clams, and clams hold both otters and people. Stream mouths hold returning salmon, and salmon hold seals, eagles and the bears that walk the shore.

Then the survey measures. Counts of otters and seals along fixed transects. Bird counts from a skiff at a set speed. Water temperature and salinity at depth. Trawl or seine samples for forage fish. The point is not a single number. It is whether the same number shows up next year on the same line in the same month.

Finally the survey asks what the bay can renew. A bay can feed the animals that live on what grows there each year. It cannot feed a population that eats the standing stock faster than the stock replaces itself. That is the line a coastal survey draws, and it is drawn from the water up, not from a wish list down.

When is the best window to see wildlife from the water?

The window is the two hours on either side of a slack tide, in flat light, from May through September. Slack water lets a skiff hold a line without fighting the current, and the animals surface more predictably when they are not pushed. Early morning is better than midday. The wind is down, the water is glass, and the glare is off the surface.

Tide matters more than time of day. A minus tide in the morning opens the mudflats and the rocky intertidal, and that is when otters and eagles work the edge. A high slack in the afternoon puts the seals back on the rocks and the porpoise back over the channel. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game season calendar tells you when the salmon are in, and the salmon are what bring the whales.

Weather is the gate. The National Weather Service marine forecast for Kachemak Bay is the first thing to read, and a small craft advisory ends the plan. Fog sits on the bay in August, and a boat without radar should wait it out. The Kachemak Bay State Park pages note the same thing for anyone landing on the park shore: the water decides the schedule, not the visitor.

What the water itself tells you

Cold water holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water, and Kachemak Bay stays cold because the outer coast and the glacier-fed streams keep feeding it. That is why the bay carries the density of life it does. A survey reads the temperature and salinity first, because those two numbers set the ceiling on everything above them.

The bay also has a second clock: daylight. In June there is light past 11 p.m., and the feed goes on late. In December there is light from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the bay is quiet. A wildlife plan built on a July visit will not match a February visit, and a survey that runs only in summer is a summer survey.

What a reader should take from this

The animals are not evenly spread. They cluster where the food clusters, and the food clusters where the water, the light and the bottom meet. Otters on the kelp, seals on the rocks, porpoise over the channel, whales on the herring, eagles on the spruce tops and the tide line. Read the tide table, read the marine forecast, pick a slack, and go slow. The bay shows what it holds to the boat that waits.
